which is the better mobile GPU? 3450 vs 8600

Tough call. The nVidia is probably faster, but might suffer from the dodgy quality that nVidia had with those chips.

So I take it a 3650 is comfortably superior to the 8600m?

Actually I think the 8600GT might still come out on top, however it's closer and I think for most laptop uses the 3650 would be good enough.
