Hard drive clicking and revving...
Just bought 2 western digital 160gb re2 drives for a fast raid0 setup. However after plugging both in, one just goes into a pattern of clicking and revving the platter over and over, the startup process waits for it on the initial bios screen then it stops and startup continues until its looking for a harddrive to boot. At this stage it will just rev and click again for a few mins. It is recognised in the bios but the sata raid controller says "error reset port!" under this drive during boot but the other drive and my dvd rom are both recognised. Do i have a faulty drive?
Re: Hard drive clicking and revving...
yes its dead, best bets to try it on its own with a spare cable to be 100% sure, but that sounds like the cllick of death.
maybe city link played football with it.
Re: Hard drive clicking and revving...
definitely dead hard drive or dying
Re: Hard drive clicking and revving...
If it sounds like one of those from this page: datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php then it's dead indeed.
However, sometimes it could because PSU doesn't generate enough power. So, try it on another computer first and if it's OK definitely do not store any valuable data on it.
Re: Hard drive clicking and revving...
Sounds like its hosed mate., I'm guessing its been dropped or subjected to a similarly catastrophic shock.
If you google UBCD you will find some useful fault finding tools. But it would be less hassle to just return it as DOA mate.
