Installing Firefox on the EEE 901 (Xandros)
:angst:
How do you do it!?!?
I've google for guides, but they make NO SENSE!
Can anyone with experience of Linux and/or EEE PCs, please help me out!?
From what I can see, i gotta update the GTK+ on my EEE, but looking through the FAQs and installation guide on the site makes my head spin!!
Thanks!
Re: Installing Firefox on the EEE 901 (Xandros)
first off are you in full desktop mode?
(i'm on ff3 on my 701 ATM)
Re: Installing Firefox on the EEE 901 (Xandros)
Full Desktop Mode meaning...?:help:
I connected my EEE to the 'net just now for the first time...
Before now, all thats happend to it is wordproccesser and spreadsheet software have been used...
Re: Installing Firefox on the EEE 901 (Xandros)
are you in the pointy clicky simple logo style layout?
i.e. do you have a taskbar at the bottom with a clickable launch button?
if you are allready in full desktop then:
presuming that it is the same for a 901 as a 701 (which logically it should be.. AFAIK they use the same kernel)
(from: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:installfirefox3)
step 1 is to download gtk2.10
open a terminal window (launch, applications, system, console)
prolly easier to do as root... so type
hit enter
type (or copy and paste :P)
Code:
wget http://apt.linex.org/linex/gtk-2.10/libgtk2.0-0_2.10.13-2~bpo.1_i386.deb
hit enter
now, extract it to a folder, (easier to extract it to /home)
so type
Code:
dpkg-deb -x libgtk2.0-0_2.10.13-2~bpo.1_i386.deb gtk2-10
hit enter.
download firefox from here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
(save it in your main /home part)
in file manager, (the blue icon) extract the firefox file you just downloaded (right click, extract)
now, go into the newly extracted folder, and edit the 'firefox' script file (blue cog icon) (right click, open with, text editor)
add
Code:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/home/user/gtk2-10/usr/lib"
at the start after the first line so that it looks like:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
#
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/home/user/gtk2-10/usr/lib"
...
...
save the file, and double click it to open firefox3 (you need to close firefox2 or iceweasel otherwise it will just open a newinstance of that.
now.. i found that going to filemanager toopen firefox ery annoying... soooo i created a shortcut (about 5 seconds ago :P)
at the bottom where the oter icons are, click the little arrow - panel menu - add to panel - special button- non-kdeapplication
type the name (firefox3 ;))
then navigate your way to that firefox startup file. then click okay,
now you'll want a better icon for it right?
right click the icon - properties - click the piccy in the corner, then pick the picture you want to use...
if you're not in full desktop then i'll walk you through that...

right.. your in simple mode...
if its the same as the 701 then:
ctrl+alt+t should pop up a window
type 'sudo su' hit enter
type 'apt-get update' (you need to be connected to the internet)
type 'apt-get install ksmserver kicker'
when asked whatever question type 'y' and hit enter.
when thats done type exit, hit enter, type exit, hit enter
then in the settings tab in settings you can tell it to always boot into full desktop,
^^ that is the nasty quick way of doing it, but it causes the system to double boot (boots into easymode for a split second, then reboots to fulldesktop) but the better method is long winded and i can't remember how to do it fully (involves editing startup.sh and someother files)
Re: Installing Firefox on the EEE 901 (Xandros)
Is there a way to change it back to simple desktop?
One of the things I pride most about my EEE is its bootup times....

have a look for eee pc double boot, and how to stop it, that way it boots fast into full desktop (same speed as easy mode)
but to change back:
if you click on launch, then above 'logout' is the 'easymode' option, then to make it boot into easy mode again go into the settings tab and change the 'always boot into full desktop' to off :)
and i'm not sure how to add icons to the easy mode part, but someone on eeeuser will know :)

Okay, long story involving hospital admissions and university interviews and more stays in hospital means that I'm just trying this now....
I run apt-get update and it runs fin and then says 'could not get lock /var/lib/dpgk/lock - open (11 resource temporarily unavailible)
Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpgk/), is another process using it?
I googled it and they say that its because some synaptic proccess is running in the background..So i open task manager and look for it under 'all processes' and see NOTHING that looks/reads/sounds vaguely like it....what do I do?
Re: Installing Firefox on the EEE 901 (Xandros)
type ps aux into the terminal and hit enter, and then post the result here.
(should be a long list of processes [i think..])
Re: Installing Firefox on the EEE 901 (Xandros)
How?
its MASSIVE! and I cant copy/paste it...
screenshot?
I think it cuts bits of it off, and i dunno how to scroll backup!

Did 'sudo su' work correctly?
If so it might be a result of a left over lock file. In which case reboot (ensuring no apt process are open) - follow the steps mentioned above until 'sudo su' has completed then
'rm /var/lib/dpgk/lock'
Hit Y if it asks you to. You should then be able to complete the process.
Same thing happened on my 701.
