    System restore query

My system restore programme is not working properly. I cannot create a restore point (task manager says prog not responding) - been like this for a while so finally trying to sort it out. Are there ways to troubleshoot this or any program that i could use to fix this problem? thanx. My OS is Win XP Media with SP3.

    Re: System restore query

You can try and run it directly, type this in the run box and hit enter.

    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Virus/spyware? You should scan before setting a restore point as a matter of course mate!

So far a troubleshooting goes mate start by ensuring nothing malicious is causing your problems.

    Re: System restore query

Thanks for the advice but yeah, I carried out a full scan and registry cleanup preceding creation of any new restore point. The prog doesn't want to know - restore window displays but the prog doesn't respond. I haven't tried a test in 'safe mode' yet but would rather it worked in normal operational conditions.

    Re: System restore query

I tried to run the prog as suggested (run as %SYSTEMROOT%\ .....but the behaviour is the same as running through the control panel facility - system restore window appears but on OK after creation of a new restore point, the prog doesn't do anything - no response. I've come to the conclusion that my system recognises the prog and displays the normal display window but is not compatible with the s/w. Anyone experienced the same prob? Is this a Microsoft Update issue? Any s/w patch available?
    Stumped!

    Re: System restore query

Is task manager shoing high CPU usage at the time you try to create a restore point? If so what's loading the CPU? You could also try

    sfc /scannow

from a command line. This scans your system files and if it finds any that are duff will replace them from either the DLLCache, the network path you installed Windows from or the install media (so you will need your install media to hand). Be aware that this may take some time, and you should run Windows Update afterwards to reinstall any updates that are overwritten.

    Re: System restore query

The CPU behaves the exact opposite - 0-1% activity. This is the main reason why I think the prog is not fully recognisable by the OS. Note my PC moves briskly on most operations but this one is goosed!

    Re: System restore query

Have you tried disabling system restore, rebooting then re-enabling it and trying again?
