Hard Drive capacity - why does it state it is half full when its not?

    Hi there,

My hard drive states that 287GB of 465 is free...

This does not make that much sense really.... programme files occupies around 20gb, music files and pictures take up around 22gb, windows takes up about another 20gb...

Basically apparently I am using 177gb of my system's hard drive capacity but i seriously doubt this. Why is it telling me this? Is there a programme out there that can specifically tell me what is installed and where?

    Thanks for your help

Have a look at TreeSize (http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/)

Or any of the other disk usage tools here: http://www.google.com/Top/Computers/...sage_Analysis/

These should tell you where all that space is going. There is usually a lot of data in the Application Data or user profiles.

You could use something like WinDirStat or JDiskReport to see where the space is being consumed.
