    Weird Noise

This may be better suited to the hardware form (not sure) so if it is could a mod move it please.

I recently installed Folding Home and got the GPU version as well. When ever it running though the 8800GT make a weird noise. Its a high pitch noise (sort of buzzer like) but its constantly off, on, off, on.
If i put folding home on full it stays on.
I really have no idea. I've noticed it before at game startup screens (constant on) when its showing the devolper and intel/nvidia logo's but i've ignored it as its only for 5 secs or so.

    Any help will be great

cross your fingers and buy a new graphics card... there is no way to fix it afaik... some cards do this, some don't

So it's nothing wrong with the card. I'm not going to break it if i do this.

It won't break unless the noise drives you to smash it to pieces

    Re: Weird Noise

Surley that high pitched noise is just the fan spinning up, when the card reaches a certain temprature - when f@h is running, GPU is at 100%, so it is warmer, hence the fan is constantly on

Its not the fan as i can control that in rivatuner and its a different noise.

    Re: Weird Noise

Hmm... if it is not the fan, is it some kind of transistor or resistor in the card wine ing when too much volts are put through it?

    Re: Weird Noise

Its normal as far as I am aware my 8800GTX did it all the time if you run various GPU benchmarks you will get a cacophony of whistles and squeals emanating from your card!
Because folding is doing one continuous calculation the noise is continuous

    Re: Weird Noise

I believe its called coil whining or capacitor whining/squealing. Nothing much you can do about it. Do google for 8800gt whining and try out their fix, if any.

    Re: Weird Noise

yeh its usually the caps making the noise, nothing to worry about. a quiet system doesnt help matters, caps or voltage regs are the usual culprits

    Re: Weird Noise

As long as its nothing to worry about i'm not bothered. I was just worried that it was about to break.
    Thanks for all the help
