New build locking up - RAM timings?

    Hi,

I'm just trying to get my new build up and running (specs in profile) but having an issue where the machine will lock up a minute or so after loading Windows (I only have XP installed at present).

I've had a look in the BIOS, and noticed that the RAM timings aren't what they should be - could this be the culprit of the lock ups?

    The RAM's timings are advertised as 4-4-4-12 @ 2.1V.

In the BIOS, the information given is:

    1st information - 5-5-5-18-3-52-6-3
    2nd information - 8-3-5-4-6-4-6
    3rd information - 14-5-1-6-6

    Voltage 1.8V?

I'm not an OCer, so aren't sure what difference these memory timings have on the stability of the PC.

    Any pointers appreciated!

I'd first try upping the voltage to the recommended 2.1V. Leave the timings as they are at first. If stable then try reducing the timings down a bit.

No joy with the RAM settings...

Upped the voltage - PC locking up
Changed the timings - PC still locking up

Will try just one stick tonight.

Yes have a go one stick at a time. What CPU/board do you have? I'm having a nightmare trying to overclock the Q6600 on my asus p5b-e. Think i'm going to go back to dual core - E8400. My ram fails prime95 testing at standard clock speeds with the Q6600. Cant get it to go wrong in another PC. AArggh.

Re: New build locking up - RAM timings?

Im having some problems overclocking an old E6300 past 2.9ghz. Cant understand the problem - I have the ram divider locked, and tried overclocking in my garage (sub-zero temperatures i swear!) but no matter what volt's i put through it, it would no budge

My Q6600 has no problems on this board, but this E6300 did 3.3ghz no problem in 06 when i got it (on a different board).

    Funnily enough it's a Asus P5Q-Pro and a Q6600.

I tried testing the memory last night with memtest. Both sticks passed fine when run on their own, but wouldn't even finish the first test if used as a pair.

Going to run the tests again on a different slot tonight to see if it's the memory or motherboard.

Re: New build locking up - RAM timings?

Well, I've run memtest again using a different slot...

Again, both sticks are fine on their own, but together it's no go.

I'm not sure what to try next as I don't think I've got another board to test the memory on - that appears to be the only way to rule out the mobo.

Re: New build locking up - RAM timings?

Check if there's a BIOS update on the mobo manufacturers website. We had a similar issue that a BIOS update solved. Certainly sounds like a RAM timing issue of some sort.

Ive now replaced my Quad core for the E8400 and the difference is amazing. Mt asus board now flies back with the dual core at stock 3.0Ghz.
Strangely enough I am now experiencing RAM problems with my OCZ platinum 800 ram. Should run at 4-4-4-15 but I need to go to 5-5-5-15 to make it stable under stress testing. The Quad core was the same so I'm guessing my RAM may not be as stable as it once was. Was perfectly happy with E6550 at 4-4-4-15. Now thinking of trying another set of RAM when I get chance.

Re: New build locking up - RAM timings?

I've now tested the RAM over and over, in various combinations of slots and BIOS settings and I'm now starting to think that perhaps it is not the RAM at fault.

It seems odd that the sticks are perfectly fine when tested on their own but not together, and maybe the mobo or CPU are at fault.

A message received from Corsair support would point in this direction too.

Check if there's a BIOS update on the mobo manufacturers website. We had a similar issue that a BIOS update solved. Certainly sounds like a RAM timing issue of some sort.
Thanks for that. I had bizarrely updated the BIOS before I even tried to install Windows as I had read many reports before purchasing the board that BIOS should be updated ASAP.

Re: New build locking up - RAM timings?

To make the thread complete, the fault was traced to a faulty motherboard.
