Can't renew ip address.. sort of...

    Hey guys,

Right, I've been tasked with fixing a uni friends laptop. Windows XP, fully updated, with antivirus. Trying to connect to a netgear router wirelessly. Sometimes it works, others it will get an ip, discard it, then try and get one again, all within several seconds. This goes on for several minutes before either working or not working (aparently at random). I tried assigning the ip statically, and it does exactly the same thing (says it's getting an ip address and then wont connect). Other pc's will connect to the router perfectly well (both windows XP and OsX) Any ideas?

    To sum up:
    • Refreshed connection
    • Cleared address using /release /renew
    • Removed firewall
    • run antivirus
    • assigned static ip
    • tested other pcs on the network

My step tomorrow is to try it out on my home network, and if that doesn't work, reinstall, it needs it anyway!

    cheers for any ideas guys,

    RwD

    MAC filtering on the router?

Nope, not enabled. It's a standard netgear setup and non of their household know enough about it to have changed any of the settings.

reinstall the wireless adapter? Something's not right if it's still trying to obtain a DHCP address even when you assign a static manually.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for the wireless card, update the firmware on the access point (if you feel up to it!) and then try removing all wireless security. If it connects with an open connection, then move it up to WEP, then try WPA.

I've had this problem before and it's been caused by either not having the correct security protocol set or an error in the wireless key.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks guys, given me some ideas to play with later. I'm more than up to updating the firmware however, as it isn't mine and the network works perfectly for the rest of their household I'm not allowed to. Wireless drivers and and security will be tested later. I'm assuming the key is correct as occasionally it will connect and work perfectly. I'm going to try and test it on my own network later to narrow it down to being the machine (hopefully the problem will remain...)

One other thing I've thought of, although it's probably not the case as other devices work, but have you tried changing the channel? it's not that there's another wireless network interfering with the connection is it?

Re: Can't renew ip address.. sort of...

When you assign the IP manually and do an "ipconfig /all" what does the output show?
One thing that's usually worth a try is a "netsh ip interface reset" or a "netsh winsock reset" (you could try the winsock fix tool, that does a bunch of other registry entry resets too)

Re: Can't renew ip address.. sort of...

Cheers for the help guys. Tried all the suggestions and nothing worked, static ip's didnt show up in ipconfig. Spent the best part of the night backing it up and reinstalling and it now works perfectly.
