    Graphics Card - Please Help!

Hi there, new to this and dont no to much about computers.

Today i bought a geforce 7300 Gt AGP8X graphics card (the one i currently have is built in and only 64mbs). The guy from PC world placed the card in the slot and said go home and install the disk.

When i got home i put the monitor in to the card but their was nothing on the monitor, seems theirs no input.

The systems requirements state that the pc requires a 350w power supply. I think mines only has a 250w supply.

If I purchase a new power supply is the card gauranteed to work or do i have to upgarde more components. My PC is a compaq presario sr100.

please ask if you need more details on my system and i will promptly reply.

    Thanks a lot

More details would be a help. 250w PSU is utter karp!

I think you need to do a bit of research on PC's etc before you spend anymore money.

    flail

this could be as simple as a bios setting or the pcworld goon (i presume you never saw your comp at least posting from the new card in the store?) could have potentially borked everything

250?? that it?? p4s are stupidly power hungry as it stands. you would need about a 400/450w supply, and that also gives you some headroom for any other expansion you may want to do. And another word of advice, dont go to PC worlds technical dept again they really dont know what they are doing

I seen the guy put the card in, just slotted it in. When i got home and put the monitor in to the new slot it was like the monitor did not read the card. The cards fan was spinning, but seemed like no output. Do you think this is to do witht he power supply, or would the card not spin if the supply was to low?

    thanks for replying.

Re: Graphics Card - Please Help!

you tried plugging the monitor into the original output and see if it posts with that?
if it does, go into the bios and see if there is an option to switch between the agp card and the integrated gfx

    yeah mate tried that also.

So if I buy a new power supply the card should definately work? how much should i be looking to spend on a new one and how easy is it to install? i installed the ram easily and could but the graphics card in easily...is the power supply a lot harder?

once again thanks for your help.

yeah that is what I meant. And it does sound like a power issue then, so if you get a new one it should work what would be your budget for a new psu? (bearing in mind its not worth touching cheap PSUs with a barge pole, as it can blow your entire system up)

What would be the cheapest and safest option to go for? are they easy to install? what happens if i get a new one and it doesnt work, what else could it be?

Re: Graphics Card - Please Help!

Pc world are crap they are expensive and i never buy from there unless I have to coz I need it now and as for their technician most of them are just staff that have worked their way up from till assistants with absolutely no pc qualifications at all..

When the pc worlds GOON put in the card did he power it up first and uninstall your old graphics card driver then swap the cards over and Finlay install the new driver.. If not that could be your problem

CORRECT GPU INSTALL = uninstall old driver..... power down pc NOT RESTART. fit new card.... power up pc...... if on vista allow vista to install its own generic driver first ( or problems can occur) then google ATI or Nvidia (which ever your card is) ....... Follow on screen directions to the card type and model you have and click insatll.....

Finally i have not seen many PCs. with less than a 450 wat supply and if your new card doesn't have a plug for an external power supply I dought that it would need to be upgraded.

Another thing to check is weather the pc world GOON has actually fitted the card into the slot properly.....

Also if it is a new power supply you need then SCAN International do a very nice 650 wat supply for about 25 quid. YES I KNOW ITS NOT AN EXPENCIVE ONE but i have used 3 of these in some of the computers I have built and had no problems after 9 months or so...
