    Dropped external hard drive

    Hey guys,

Unfortunately, this morning, my external hard drive on the floor, it's not not working. It turns on and spins up, and is recognized by windows, but it says it needs formatting and "fails to format". Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Matt

    Re: Dropped external hard drive

The heads may have collided with the disk surface....my understanding is that for quite some years hard drives auto-park their heads to a safe(ish) area when they power-down......so I would guess that either the heads are damaged or the drive was on when it was dropped....

Might be worth trying spinrite to see if it shows bad sectors that need adding to the drives list of unusable disk areas....

Of course, the drive could be completely toast

Worth an RMA though I guess

    Re: Dropped external hard drive

Try spinrite then, you may have just damaged a small amount of disk surface. The fact that the drive shows up and spins-up gives some hope.

Darn. No important data on there. Does anyone know a program / something that can check if it is alright? Just a thought.
