There are a few problems with *some* asus motherboards but there's not a single manufacturer completely without problems from dodgy bios releases or quality issues otherwise. Plus you're covered by warranty, don't worry too much.
On the problem itself it might be wise to confirm it isn't a short on the motherboard - best way really is to take the motherboard and everything out of the system and run it outside of the case for a while, and see if there's any improvement. Some cases (including some of the very high end ones) have little lumps and nodules from welding or rivets that can sometimes foul the underside of the motherboard and cause an issue.
Memory problems have been covered, but you didn't yet answer what was mentioned about what PSU you bought - a higher wattage is all well and good but if it's a poor quality one, it could be worse than your original 380w supply for the job at hand.
Out of interest, and going from personal experience + posts of note on the Asus community forums, could you remove *all* USB devices from the system (may mean finding a ps2 keyboard for the time being) and seeing if it has any bearing? Mine (an asus P5K-E WiFi thing) sometimes refuses to boot because of the chopped up Dell card reader hooked into one of the internal USB headers, although there's nothing otherwise wrong with it. Many people previously have only noticed these problems since updating to one of the more recent BIOS releases.
