asus p5n-e sli instant shut down

    hey guys.
ive been searching around and im seeing same problem with this asus MB.
mine does exactly the same just shuts off like a short or something and reboots.
it does it when i click on a command to install something like it does it when i touch a jumpdrive to front usb port. so theres no sense of it wether its static or software installs, i tried to install messenger live the other day and everysingle time i clik to install it after the download it shut down, thats the only time i have had that type of consistency for making it shut down. but when i downloaded the complete messenger live 8.1 and installed it that way, it worked.
heres the kicker. i formated reinstalled xp and i changed cases and put a 500 watt PS.(from 380) i also changed video cards from ati to nvidia. now when i did this i got less shutdowns but still doing it.
i also get a beep once and a while from the computer, theres no speaker in case so i guess its on MB.
only thing i havent changed is my 2 gigs of ddr2 dual mode ram. and i cant believe i need an even bigger ps?? so im stumped here. hoping someone out there has fixed this problem.
    im running a intel dual core 6400 @ 2.13 with xp sp3
added note: its not heat, the system is well cooled.
    thanks
    joey

    Hi mate

Have separated this into a new thread for you. You'll get a much better response in a new thread than from one bumped from 2004

http://forums.hexus.net/help-technic...-reason-4.html was the last thread for reference

    Re: Motherboard help

Have you tried running memtest86+ to test your memory?
Also, turn of auto reboot on error just in case it's blue screening :

    1. Go to 'Start' -> 'Control Panel' -> 'System'
    2. Select 'Advanced'
    3. Under the 'Startup and Recovery' section, click 'Settings'
    4. Under System Failure un-check 'Automatically restart'

    Re: Motherboard help

Okay, normally most people would recommend running memtest for around 3-4 passes but we can leave that for a later test I guess.
Have you tried a BIOS update? I had a quick look and the latest for your board is 1301:

    http://support.asus.com/download/dow...el=P5N-E%20SLI

Other than that the next thing I'd try is updating all your drivers, starting with the motherboard, to try and rule out a software issue.
Also, when it powers off does it allow you to switch back on straight away?

    Re: Motherboard help

When it restarts do you get a "this system has recovered from a serious error" message, or any blue screen errors at all? Is there anything in the event log to suggest a reason for the unprompted shutdown?

    Re: Motherboard help

all i get is it shuts down and reboots, with no warning before or after, no blue screen, no serious error message. if i look in system event log i see DCOM ERROR from dec 8 till now . like hundreds of them every 15 to 20 min. havent had it shut down lately to pin point an event log.

What voltage are you running your memory at. The default for DDR2 is 1.8V but many manufacturers set their memory to run at higher voltages. My GSkill memory requires 2.2 to 2.5V!!!

Yes, just download the old bios and repeat the same steps you did to update it.
