    Dead laptop question

I have an Advent 7087 laptop that won't power up. The mains adaptor seems to be working as the battery light flashes red on the laptop when you press the power button. However nothing else happens - no fan or sounds at all.

I have removed the battery and tried operating it on the mains to no avail. Am I correct that the laptop should work with a battery removed? If so I am assuming the problem is too serious to be worth fixing - it's an old Celeron CPU with 512Mb DDR RAM.

Incidentally have you ever come across a laptop that needs a (removable) battery installed to function?

    Re: Dead laptop question

Sounds like you've tried most things. You could try disconnecting the power cable, holding the laptop power button down for 30 seconds, let go then plug the power cable back in and switch on. This has worked in the past on some machines.

No, generally you can run all laptops without a battery. If you have a spare laptop try swapping the hard drive and RAM memory. If that doesn't help you are probably better of buying a new laptop.

    Re: Dead laptop question

if it isn't the ram of the hard drive it's likely the motherboard. in that case it would most likely be not worth replacing.
