    Re: Heatsink knocked off...

i had a IP35 Dark Raider about a month ago, and i still have the Scythe Mine, and i picked up my case once and just heard a snap, one of the push pins had just broken.. but because only 1 of them broke it hadn't moved very far, well not far enough to notice anyway.
so i checked everything, couldn't find anything wrong with it.. so i booted it up, got into Windows and everything seemed fine, then abuot 2 minutes later it just powered down!
the heatsink wasn't touching the CPU at all, so the thermal thing on the Intel chip was kicking in and killing the power to the CPU.

    your CPU should be fine
it's also a lot easier if you install the heatsink while the motherboard is out of the case.

    Re: Heatsink knocked off...

Thanks matty . Yeah, I've had so much trouble with this build. Everything works great, but it's just such a tight squeeze. The heatsink is a little big I think, so it's actually impossible (unless your fingers are about 5mm wide) to install the motherboard with the heatsink on it. Going to get one of my friends to have a look and see if he can get the heatsink on properly this time. If not, I'll just sell it and get a more compatible one .

So do you think it's worth buying the bolt thru, or are the push pins just as good if you get them right?

    Re: Heatsink knocked off...

    Shameless bump .

Took the heatsink out and cleaned it out - the dust bunnies had done a number on him .

Luckily the motherboard isn't damaged at all. I don't have anything to clean off the thermal paste now, and don't have any thermal paste around to reseat it lol. I'll buy some tomorrow. Can you just clean the paste off the heatsink with some kitchen towel or something? Or is it better to buy use rubbing alcohol or whatever (never actually had to remove paste myself ).

you'll do a much better job using alcohol.. some people just use vodka or something like that.

the push pins work well, so long as you use them properly.. you have to really push them through to do a good job of it!

    Re: Heatsink knocked off...

The thing is, it's a catch 22 situation.

You can't install the mobo with the heatsink on.
You can't install the heatsink properly in the case.

Theres one push pin right in the corner which is nearly impossible to get in because it's right up the back of the case, in the corner. Managed it last time because my brother has small hands and he managed to install it (obviously not correctly ). I'll try tomorrow then.
