Re: Heatsink knocked off...
most modern proccys will just kill all load and halt when a certain thermal threshold is reached (basically, they turn themselves off to prevent damage)
i'm guessing you are using pushpins, as they are nasty pieces of work and should be killed to death
but if you reseat the heatsink with fresh TP then it should be fine,
if not... then the proccy is unfortunately b0rked :(
if the latter then it will teach you to run with side panels off (read as 'get a decent case' :P)
hope it's okay for you though :) it's annoying as hell when your chair probes things without you realising (not like that :o)
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
The computer was sitting doing nothing, so at least I wasn't gaming or something when it happened lol.
Ugh, don't even get me started on the trouble pushpins have caused in the building of my computer.
What do you mean, what's the case got to do with stupid pushpins lol?

were you running with the side off to keep it slightly cooler?
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
No, side panels were on. What, so I'm to take the side panels off my computer when I'm using it...?
And what difference would it make? If the heatsink fell off, what would having side panels off do anyway :S ?
It's a Q6600 btw :) .
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
You won't kill an Intel like that :D. I would be more worried about the heatsink damaging the motherboard when it popped off :)
Even back in the P3/4 days you would have been fine.
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
the heatsink fell of when the side panels were on :o?
i thought you meant the chair actually hit the heatsink and knocked it off....
i say get a through bolt kit and actually mount the heatsink not just place it with namby pamby pushpins, i just throw my pc around and mine hasn't fallen off :D
but the only way you could have damaged the proccy is if the HSF has actually dinted or scratched the heatspreader... and that chance is negligible
and some people run without sidepanels because it keeps it slightly cooler if you don't have decent airflow :)
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
After searching round the internet and reading your post it's put my mind at ease :P .Only one side came off, so I have the case lying down flat so it won't put extra strain on the motherboard.
Hmm, damaging the motherboard could be an even worse problem - got an OEM version of windows.
Oh lol, no the chair just bumped the front of the case and that knocked 2 of the push pins out it seems! Ridiculous! It's a scythe ninja heatsink.
The only place I could find a bolt thru kit was on scan and they were out of stock for ages and I eventually just forgot about it, definately be picking up one of them then!
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
personally i wouldn't trust the push-pins for anything that weighs more than a cheese sandwich :)
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
And the scythe ninja is a hell of a heavy cheese sandwich :) .

Would this do?
Heatsink: Sycthe ninja
Mobo: Ip-35 Dark Raider
CPU: Q6600
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
If you have those push pin's in right it won't go any where. I've bashed my ninja off before so I made sure they were on properly the next time. It's fine now, can bash the case round all I like.. and I do like lol
I'm not saying they are any good but they do work after a fashion.
That bolt through kit doesn't look right, it's for converting core 2 (775) to i7 (1366).
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
I was pretty certain they were in as tight as they could go, obviously not :P .
I'd be much more at ease knowing my heatsink was on with some nice big metal bolts rather than flimsy little pins lol :) .

Yup. You installed it incorrectly in the first place. If a properly installed heatsink falls off, its gonna take a chunk of the mobo with it...
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
Right, I'll reseat it then and make sure the push pins are 100% installed correctly. Cheers guys. Let's just hope everything is ok.
Re: Heatsink knocked off...
Argh, push-pin's...
That is why I took them off, they look supidly fragile and replaced them with a thermalright 775 bolt through kit.
It's not gonna fall off with this holding it in place now :)
