My friend's PC does this every thime it is powered up. Safe mode is the same. There is a message copes up too fast to read then vista says it is shutting down. Something like 'There are too many files running for a 16 bit...'
Any ideas?

Have you tried using the recovery options on the Vista disc?
Well we tried booting from the vista dvd, but it only gave installation options. I've never used recovery in vista, how do you access it?

To access the System Recovery Options menu
If you have a Windows installation disc:
1. Insert the installation disc.
2. Restart your computer.
3. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
4. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
5. Click Repair your computer.
6. Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
7. On the System Recovery Options menu, click a tool to open it.

Well I tried the recovery console but it didn't help. I've done a clean install and loaded all the altest drivers and it seems fine. Now, how much money to ask for?
LOL.
I was thinking more for my time spent recovering his photos from the hard drive, installing vista and installing drivers. I think PC World would charge about £150 for that. He dropped off some beers when he picked up his computer. Which is fine.
Beers are good - that's what mates rates are for
