Re: partition new HD or not?
I have always partitioned my drives. A smaller partition for the OS and then a bigger partition for the rest of my stuff. That way if I have to reformat and reinstall I don't lose the whole lot.
As for the pagefile, it's nice to have it on a separate drive (if you have one). If not, don't sweat it.
Re: partition new HD or not?
I do have space for a separate partition for the pagefile. What size would you suggest for it? I have 3 gb of RAM & an XP system. Thanks for your replies.
Also, Will, why do you need (or like to use) such a large pagefile?

Re: partition new HD or not?
i always partition a drive into at least 2 and as for the pagefile it should be 1.5 times the system ram, this is for pc's and servers.
1gb = 1536mb
2gb = 3072mb etc
Re: partition new HD or not?
Yeah go with 3gb (3072mb) for the pagefile. I'd maybe make a 6gb partition to put it in though.
Re: partition new HD or not?
Separate partition for data - then it is on its own independant file system. Using a top level directory means that it is part of the FS that the OS uses - and if the OS install reformats - bang goes your data (although not too much of a problem because you do regularly back up... don't you?)
Re: partition new HD or not?
pagefile will *always* be used no matter how much ram you have, that's just how windows was designed to work..
i only have a 2gb pagefile and it works fine. if you're gonna make a partition just for the pagefile, there's no need to make it much bigger than what you need.
format the drive, make the first partition about 100mb larger than what you need, make the second partition and start the windows install on it.. what will most likely happen is that your boot files will end up on the pagefile partition which will be like 1mb anyways if that.

On the otherhand I've used no page file on my Mini9 and it ran fine, no complain of any sort.
On my desktop I have 2GB of pagefile each on 3 drives as I keep using very close to 4GB ram quite oftenly and if I place it on the OS drive then my system lags like hell.
What I do is on the OS drive I cut 20GB for OS partition, and all other disks have single partition only.
All the frequent write are concentrated on one drive only, all other drives only store static data, so defrag is not a concern at all.

Personally, I prefer for it to be managed by Windows.
Re: partition new HD or not?
just checked mine cause i rma'd a hard drive and it was all messed up.. i apparently had no pagefile set on any drive but there was still a pagefile.sys on my windows drive which was in use

Why would you make the partition double the size of the pagefile?
Thanks a lot to everyone here who replied with your recommendations.

If I understand what you said correctly, why do you have a pagefile on 3 different drives, rather than just on 1 of the non-OS drives?

OK, thanks for your answers & for clearing that up. :)
