Re: hi there please help :(

All you need to do is connect 2 cables - power cable and interface cable.

Check to see, are there to cables plugged into the back of the harddrive right now?

Re: hi there please help :(

I think Austin is saying that all of the cables were pretty much disconnected from the motherboard.

So let's start with the basics.
Your power supply unit (PSU) has all these cables coming out of it to feed power to the individual components, so that they can work properly. Once upon a time it pretty much only went to the motherboard (well, near enough) which in turn fed power to all of the other bits and pieces. The motherboard still performs this role to a degree, however lots of bits and pieces also need direct connections from the PSU as well. In addition to these power leads, there will also be data cables for some devices that will connect the device to the motherboard. I can't be 100% certain of the following since i dont know what's inside your particular computer, but this is a good guess:

1: Motherboard. This will have pretty much all the data cables going into it, so take your time and connect them one by one. In terms of power, there will be a long-ish one (either 20 or 24 pins) which will only go in one way, usually situated along one side of the motherboard, plus a 4 pin connector close to the CPU. Both of those are necessary for healthy operation of the machine.

2: Optical drives. Also called DVD or CD drives, they will either have an IDE (old fashioned, flat and wide) connector or SATA (new, about 1 cm wide) connector. In either case, they also need a power connector

3: Hard drives. Usually the same as the optical drives, the need power and data, and also went through a change over the past few years from IDE to SATA connections. It's largely irrelevant to you however since you will (obviously) have all the correct connectors in your machine!

4: Floppy drive. In many ways i hope you dont have one of these still, however just in case know that the data cable can look sometimes alot like an IDE cable (thin, flat and wide) so don't mix them up - the connectors don't physically push into another slot so you cant do any damage, but it's annoying if you confuse them. The power connector is quite small, and again unique.

5: USB / memory card reader, often on the front of the case. Almost always this is a USB device, which means the lead is a standard USB connector (ie standard for inside a PC, but not the same as what you see on the outside). It's a 4 x 2 pin block, with an outer-top bit blocked out. Somewhere on the motherboard (usually bottom right as you look at it) will be a whole bunch of USB connector pins, just line up the 7 holes with the 7 pins and push down.

6: Graphics card. You may or may not have one, and it may or may not require more power than is provided by the motherboard. If so, the power input is on the far right edge of the graphics card as you look at it, and you'll have to hunt around for a spare correct-looking power connector.

Have a look at this Custom PC guide for general pics of cables:

(Click 'Launch this Guide' under the picture)

I'll try and find a better visual guide to post here if i can.

MSIC has written an good guide there. You may also want to google building a PC. This will bring up various sites that will also show you pictures off what goes where e.g.:
