Virgin box, through HDMI, different sound source..

Took the leap and bought an HDMI lead for my virgin HD box. I have the sound playing through a dvd player, with 5.1 surround sound. It works fine when in standard def, but when I switch to the hdmi lead and change the output to HD, I get no sound from the surround sound and only from the tv speakers.

    So it goes like this:

Virgin box (hdmi) --> TV --> (scart) Dvd player --> 5.1 surround

Is it possible to have the sound going through the dvd player like it usually does when usually an hdmi lead?

i did my homework as im planning on going hi def, the vm box's are ment to only play 2.1 or no sound via hdmi so you have to use the optical connection on the vm box
