No display after adding 3rd hard drive
I have Vista Home Premium and today I added a 3rd hard drive to my system. Upon startup everything seems fine and then the monitor goes to no display and sleep mode. If I startup in safe mode everything is fine. Could this be a PSU issue with my system now not getting enough power? I have 4x120mm fans and a 200m fan in my case. The drive has been formatted in safe mode and works fine.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
one thing that can cause this is the bios/cmos, reset them by removing the cmos jumper, then the battery then replace them. there could be a hardware confusion.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
I cleared the CMOS but removing the battery was a no go. Still not working unless its safe mode only.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
I also disconnected the new drive so it was back to the old setup and it still did not work, I am now a little perplexed.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
check all your connections, also in safemode reset your display driver down to 800 x 600 just to double check your not out of range.
This is a strange one.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
Right I have managed to uninstall the nvidia drivers in safe mode and then reboot into the normal unsafe version of Windows but obviously only at a low resolution. I then installed the latest nvidia drivers and rebooted as suggested, upon reboot the same problem occurs, ie windows loading screen appears and just before the logo comes up the display says no signal. I know windows loads though as I hear the sounds. Why would my gfx card suddenly cause all of these problems after adding a simple hard drive?
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
make sure the card is seated right in the slot, you could have knocked it
also make sure that in your BIOS that PCI-e is your first display adapter.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
The card is seated correctly and bios is set to pci and not peg. I have still had no luck getting this to work, its driving me mad.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
it might be time for an uninstall of the drivers, driver cleaner and download the newst driver.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
I have already tried this with no success, somebody suggested to me that the latest nvidia drivers are causing alot of black screen so I will try some older ones.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
Not sure psu would cause this directly. But are your extra power connectors plugged in on gfx and mobo if needed? I seem to remember forgetting to plug a molex back into a previous gfx card which caused some wierd issues.
Could well be a driver issue, did you do anything else at the time you installed your new drive?
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
If you have a windows disc, boot from it and run a chkdsk, I had a a similar problem recently and this took care of it. A windows file may be lost, damage, ect. This is more of a shot in the dark though.

Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
I assume you haven't plugged the new HDD in with the same cable that is powering the graphics card? That can often cause an issue.
Really clutching at straws now trying to think of a solution.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
I think the addition of the HDD was just a coincidence. I have a Viewsonic VX2025WM and there are alot of reports on the web regarding their faulty DVI connections. I have now tried a different screen with no problems, and I have used a VGA cable connected via a VGA-DVI adaptor to my graphics card and windows works fine. Either my DVI cable is broken or the DVI port on the monitor itself.
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
well does the DVI port and DVI cable work alright if you boot into safe mode?
Re: No display after adding 3rd hard drive
I had this problem, i believe i have the solution. Its the driver issue, its todo with your screen and gpu and i found a way to sort it, iam suffering from it right now(just reformatted) so gimme a few mins and ill get the link when i find it.
