The right side, however, is moulded differently. However, since rounded pins will fit in square holes, it will still fit the left side of the mobo CPU connector. If you look at the wiring, you'll also find that the two halves of the 4+4 are electrically identical, even if the mouldings are different on some cables.
I came back on to say I found the answer, but Saracen you got it spot on.
I read about the same problem here with a Corsair PSU.
btw, I'll be using an e4600.

Haven't read this thread much but this should be useful - full pics, pinouts, mouldings and explanation of almost all standard PSU connectors:

And fwiw, the only thing that matters with the 8 pin is that the ground and 12v cables are in the right place, so you can make your own plug (or make one fit) so long as pins 1-4 contain ground cables and 5-8 contain +12v (preferably split between two rails). 8pin PCI-e only has 12v on pins 1-3, the rest are ground (which makes me wonder why the need for different 8 and 6 pin PCI-es, 8 just has two extra grounds  )

I think one of the extra ground wires is used for +12v sense on some PSUs. Still don't understand why 8 pin needs 2 extra ground wires to supply more current, though?
