External USB drive disappeared
Hello - I wonder if anyone could offer me any guidance with this.
Following discussion in this thread (http://forums.hexus.net/help-technic...hard-disk.html) I purchased an Akasa enclosure for a seagate drive, which I was connecting with a USB cable to a PC running XP sp2. I used it for back-ups of my main drive.
All was fine, until one day I noticed an error message from my back-up software saying the disc was full. I ignored this initially, as I was busy, and came back to it later in the day. The drive appeared to have disappeard from Explorer, and powering it on/off, disconnecting/connecting, changing USB ports/ cable etc didn't make any difference. It wasn't showing up when connected to a laptop, either.
On closer inspection, I found that although it didn't appear in Disk Management, it did show up as an anonymous USB device in Device Manager (likewise it was listed as a storage device under USB devices).
Presuming the hard drive had packed up, I sent it off to Seagate for a replacement. This has duly arrived, but doesn't seem to have made any difference.
Does this mean the enclosure is knackered - or am I missing something else obvious to try? I've disabled, uninstalled and reinstalled the drive, with no joy.
Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks.
Re: External USB drive disappeared
Anyone? I'd rather not return to enclosure to Scan if there's something obvious I'm missing.
Re: External USB drive disappeared
u really need to test it on another pc to be sure
Re: External USB drive disappeared
Thanks - yes, I've tried the drive in another PC and it seems fine, so I think it must be the caddy. In the abscence of anyother ideas, I've posted it off to Scan today to get a replacement.
Cheers.
