New External Hard Drive Killing Overclock??

Hey folks, I just recently replaced a Seagate 320gb External Hard Drive for a 1TB My Book Essential Edition - but the first time I physically turned off my computer with this drive plugged into the USB I notice that my overclock is lost and I have returned to default speeds.

My motherboard is the pretty fussy Gigabyte P35C-DS3R and my CPU is a Q6600 running @ 3.1ghz so is this possible??

When I unplug the usb drive and start up my machine the overclock sticks as normal - I then have to plug in the external ... please tell me this can't be happening.

is it just the overclock or all your bios settings defaulting?

IIRC Gigabyte motherboards store a copy of the BIOS on a system HDD. When the system loads, I think it compares the images. Maybe this is what's happening? Double check that your USB HDD isn't included in the boot list.

No the voltage and the memory timings go back to default as well - suppose I should have mentioned that when booting up with the external attached it does go through the routine of a failed overclock, ie the machine does not post restarts and the default values are all loaded ... fine when the USB is disconnected however.

I will need to do some more investigating methinks.

Thanks I will have a look in the bios and see if that is possible.

I wouldnt plug the external hard drive in till you have booted up the pc, sometimes bios's are wierd, like mine freezes if you plug an ipod in while posting.

My HTPC has a paddy fit if you have a exHDD plugged in on boot, it just plain refuses to boot past the windows logo until the HDD is turned off.

Yeah but it was fine with the Seagate 320gb external I had plugged in before ... looks like it could be ebay for this piece of crap then!!
