    Hard Disc Configuration??

Hi Folks, as you may have read on another of my award winning threads I am having major problems with my Western Digital 1TB My Book ... so I have a cunning plan.

    Currently have:
500GB Samsung Spinpoint (with operating system)
1TB Samsung Spinpoint (used purely for storage)
    1TB WD External NoMyBook

basically I want to ditch the 1TB External WD and the 500GB Samsung Spinpoint and replace them both with a 1.5TB Seagate Internal Drive (I have a Coolermaster Cosmos so figure an external is just a bit of a slow waste of space).

So how would I go about this then bearing in mind the 500GB has the current Operating System which I would want to install on to the 1TB Samsung - can this be done (easily I hope)??.

Or would I just be best keeping the 500GB Samsung Spinpoint with the operating system??

    Re: Hard Disc Configuration??

You could use something like Achronis DiskDirector to copy the boot partition off the 500GB drive onto the 1TB. Once you have copied the data off that onto the new 1.5TB of course.

You will probably need to re-run the Windows install from the CD and select the repair installtion option. That will fix any boot isues you have because of moving to another drive etc.

I've done this a couple of times with my HTPC. It was easier to do this that it was to completely strip it down and physically move or replace drives.

    Thanks Funkstar.

I will need to think about whether it is worth the hassle - or just stick with the 500GB Samsung.

Alternatively clone your current boot disk to the new one using TrueImage or similar, and then resize the partition as required.

    Re: Hard Disc Configuration??

heres an even better idea, take the drive out the caddy, put it in the pc and spend the money on something else, less stress, no hard drive swapping. you can start installing stuff onto either of the none windows drives, or even move the entire my documents to another drive with a couple of clicks. more drives makes for better performance. my 150gb raptor windows drive holds windows and a few installs of apps/games. all the temp files and paging file are on there own raid0 array of 2x36gb raptors, my docs are on a partition of my 1tb and downloads and stuff go on another partition and large installs like flight sim are on a 3rd.

windows 7 is on my 250gb maxtor drive.

makes for a fast pc that way.
