Hi, I have just started using my laptop for folding since it's on all the time anyway, and RMClock and SpeedFan both show my lappy reaching CPU core temps of up to 80 centigrade. Will this damage my laptop?
Thanks in advance...

it wont help matters, laptops are not really designed to run 100% cpu none stop. your on the upper limits there.
Different CPUs have different recommended temperatures. 80° sounds on the high side, but some Intels go up to 90°. It'd be a good idea to check what maximum temperature your CPU is rated for. Either way, making sure all cooling systems are working fully would be wise - clean out the fans, remove dust, etc.
I was recently asked to fix a laptop that kept freezing after an hour or so of use. I ran orthos for 2 hours and the temperature finally peaked at 85c (15c ambient and laptop raised off desk). With a clean of the cpu and some cheap thermal paste, the 2 hour load temperature was reduced to 52c. I noticed there appeared to be nothing really to clean off the cpu, making me wonder if it ever had paste applied.
they dont have paste on the cpu, the paste is under a thin metal sheet on the heatsink, crap design and the 1st thing i remove.
it does alow the heatsink to move on the cpu if it gets banged about, but so does a decent thermal paste that doesnt set.
i would not use a laptop for folding though, your asking for trouble.
Thanks everyone.
I've got some coolfeet but temps are still pretty high.
GoNz0 or sadbuttrue, do you know any good guides to cleaning and re-pasting the CPU?
its not that hard, find the heatsink, remove it. the cpu should already be clean.
peel off the heatsinks foil sheet and remove the thermal pad along with it. clean as best you can with alcohol/nail varnish remover.
apply a bit of paste to the cpu and reapply.
make sure the heatsinks fluff free in the vents and see how you get on.
Great - thanks for all the help!
I sustained 74'C on my T7200 at 100% for weeks at a time, still working after 2.5 years.
