    Create my own software?

    Hi,

I would like to create my own software. crazy i know.

I have a server running a linux OS. in the Var/Etc folder I have a config file (.cfg) i am editing this file constantly at least once a day.

I would like to create a bit of software that i could just run and it will automaticaaly log in for me and open the file and give me a text box, i can pop the text in that i want and then hit save and exit.

maybe make a few other additions but that is the top and bottom of it.

Is there any "create your own software" software that could do this for me?

You are looking at writing a script that will do what you want. There are several on the forum that will be able to advise you - I'm not a scrpting expert.

    Re: Create my own software?

No, putty is a terminal client.

Look up 'shell scripting' as a first port of call. If they aren't good enough, then look up some scripting languages like PERL.

If you already have a handbook for the linux you are running it will probably cover the basics of scripting. Otherwise I can recommend 'Unix shells by example - Ellie Quigley' as a good starting point.

Post whatever it is you specifically want to do here, and I'll have a stab at writing it for you. I'm bored today.

    Re: Create my own software?

Wow thanks very much. ok i have a clark connect server running. there is a file called cccam.cfg in the var/etc folder. i am thinking of a little desktop gui when i click on it and load it up it automatically logs in to the server and opens that cfg file. i dont want to see all the text so it would be open in the background. then i want to see a text input box. if i write a line in to the box then click on save it would copy what ever i wrote in the text box is the written to line 1 of the cfg file, If i got this far i think i would be able to develop it myself with a bit of advice and help.

If you get the time B0redom and dont mind having a crack or need any details you can PM me. or MSN me.

    Thanks man.
