Re: want to buy a new hard drive

I think that any 80GB hard drive is going to have dire performance compared to any drive made in the last year. The difference should be very noticable! Espcecially if you partition it to get the OS on the outer edge of the drive.

That WD Blue AAKS should be a very nice performer....not sure how to tell but if thats the single 320GB platter version, it will be as fast as the 1TB model.

Re: want to buy a new hard drive

Sorry mate ive scrapped the hard drive idea. gone for ram and gfx card instead, i assume thats a better idea.

seeing is as its used for gaming, cod2, cod4, bioshock, world in conflict. i should be fine.

Re: want to buy a new hard drive

No idea on the gfx card TBH, there are way too many low to mid range cards to keep track of lately

As for the RAM, the scan price is decent, although I personally would look around for second hand if looking for 2 x 1 GB DDR2, most people dont want sticks smaller then 2GB these days.

Re: want to buy a new hard drive

i dont think its a low graphics card, mid/highish maybe. obviously not amazing but im right on assuming it will rape the 9500GT.

have you already bought these? as you can get a 4830 for only £5 more than that 4670 at novatech and unless you are overclocking you may be better just getting a single generic 2gb stick of ram so you can easily add a second later

I am looking for a new HD. Are the 2.5 ones as good / fast as the 3.5 ones? Size is important. I like the idea of a laptop HD in a tower. Plus they should be quieter?

Generally, laptop HDDs are considerably slower than desktop drives but some of the high end models are pretty quick. They are generally a lot quieter than desktop drives but it depends on the model. How much space do you want/need? 500GB is the biggest size currently available for 2.5in drives AFAIK.
SPCR is a good place to look for quiet hardware and they have plenty of HDD reviews, including 2.5in drives. http://www.silentpcreview.com/section13.html
