E8500 adventures

I swapped my E6750 for an E8500 and the temps were reported in BIOS as 98C!

My Thermaltake Orb doesn't even screw anymore properly - the screw holes have become big and don't grip the screws.

I am now using a backup Spire HSF ( a crap HSF ) and the temps are 60C on the E6750. E8500 fails again and still tries to run at 98C.

Do the E8500 have high temps?
And is the E8500 bigger in size .. slightly... than the E6750?
And what to do about the Thermaltake Orb ?

The E8500 should produce less heat than the E6750 & theyre both the same size. With a good heatsink you should idle around 29c, i know my E6550 used to idle at 30/31c on a Freezer Pro 7.

Edit: What stepping is you new CPU, becuase arent theyre issues with Abit boards and the E0 wolfdale chips ?

Yup, turned out E8500 is not supported to ABIT IP35-E

Any ideas on fixing the DIY screwing in issue of the Thermaltake dude?

You can either glue it (probably not ideal), slightly larger bore screw and tap a new thread? or try a nut/bolt with a washer if there is space through to the other side? Just throwing in ideas.

For screw holes in wood a few matchsticks and wood glue does the trick! not sure that will help.

Did a bit of googling.

I should upgrade to latest BIOS available , 18 , and then try. If that doesn't , I should use a Beta BIOS available on abit forums that support it.

Last night, I got a HSF from a friend and used it with my E6750 and mobo doesnt POST anymore!

Due to the build of the HSF, I had to use some nuts/bolts to secure the 4 legs to the motherboard. Nuts undernetah the motherboard and legs screw into them.

Do you guys think this may have fried the motherbaord? Should I have used washers?

Ive never used a HSF which needs bolts so i cant tell you if it can short the motherboard or something similair. Did you try the E8500 as well? Also make sure all wires are connected !!!

I don't think you'll be able to 'ghetto' the kind of pressure that proper bolts make, unless you use a bolt and nut, but then there's the chance of bending/damaging the board.

Best off just buying a new Heatsink.
