Good Guides for Building a PC
I am about to build my own PC and was wondering if any of you could link to some useful guides. I already checked out a video guide on Maximum PC on how to build a PC, but I was wondering if anyone could link to a more detailed guide somewhere else.
I also know there was previously a thread about this, however it's been many months since then and I hoped that new more relevant guides have come up.
So, if you know of a guide online, please link.
Thanks
Varmint
Re: Good Guides for Building a PC
We could probably create you one if you give us a rundown of what your looking at, component wise?
Re: Good Guides for Building a PC
http://www.buildeasypc.com/hw/hardware.htm is pretty clear & will give you the basics, which never really change much.
And as Terbinator says, a kit rundown will enable the Hexus 'massiv' to give you more focussed help :)
Do you have any PC building experience at all? Just so you don't get patronised.
Re: Good Guides for Building a PC
I don't have any PC building experience at all, and I only have a basic knowledge. The parts I am using are:
Motherboard
*Gigabyte MA770-UD3, AMD 770, Sok AM3/AM2, PCI-E 2.0(x16), DDR2 1066/1333(OC), SATA 3Gb/s, RAID, ATX
Processor
*HDZ720WFGIBOX - AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition, Sok AM3, 2.8GHz, 7.5MB Total Cache, 95W, Retail
Case
*Antec 300 Three Hundred Black Case - No PSU
PSU
*Corsair 450W HX Series Modular PSU - 7 Year Warranty
GPU
*MSI HD 4650 512MB GDDR2 VGA DVI PCI-E Graphics Card
Hard Drive
*1TB Samsung HD103UJ Spinpoint F1, SATA 3Gb/s, 7200rpm, 32MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ
Memory
*Corsair 4Gb (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 XMS2 Memory CL5 (5-6-6-18) 2.1V
DVD Drive
*Sony AD-7241S-0B 24x DVD±R, 12xDVD±DL, DVD+RW x8/-RWx6 ,12xRAM SATA, Black, Lightscribe, OEM
Wireless
*Edimax EW-7128G 54Mbps Wireless PCI Card
I can't change them as I have already ordered. So could anyone provide any useful tips?
Re: Good Guides for Building a PC
The way is do things (when using cases) is:
- Put the CPU into the Motherboard
- Put the RAM into the Motherboard
- Fit the Heatsink to the Motherboard
- Fit the Motherboard to the Case (Put stand-offs in, if their not already)
- Route the Front Panel (LEDs and Switches) neatly and fit to the motherboard
- Fit the Power Supply, DVD-Drive and Hard-Drive
- Route the Power Supply's cables (You got a modular, so it'd be tidier) to the Motherboard (24pin and 8pin) and the SATA cables behind the motherboard tray.
- Fit the SATA Data cables from the DVD and Hard-Drive to the Motherboard
- Fit the Expansion Cards (Graphics and Wireless)
- Do some cable management
- Put sides back on
- Attach all external cables (USB, Power, DVI/VGA/HDMI etc.)
- Use either a DVD or USB to install Windows
And your done!

It's actually about time one of our resident l33t PC builderz did a step-by-step guide :)

That would be pointless, as the majority of parts nowadays are outdated as soon as you buy em.

No problem buddy, got a DSLR camera although i dont know how to use it to its full potential, atleast they will be clear pictures with detailed instructions lol.
Re: Good Guides for Building a PC
As someone who just finished their first ever build, I can tell you that's it's fiddly but not as hard as I thought.
I would offer the following though,
1) RAM sticks and other components that join the mainboard need more force than you might expect.
2) Other components and plugs generally only fit one way. Don't force them.
3) If you start to get frustrated, with an intractable problem, go outside, have a cuppa and post here.
Re: Good Guides for Building a PC
I'm not going to be overclocking immediately and I am not going to push the PC to it's limit so will I really need a heatsink just yet? Or can I postpone getting one?

As long as they are in focus (biggest bugbear is out of focus "informative" pics) and don't feature any of your nether regions, I don't think people will mind that they're not technically perfect pictures.

Heatsink as in CPU cooler buddy, thats just the general term for the component. You will get one with the CPU, but they arent very good for overclocking and would need aftermarket.
Re: Good Guides for Building a PC
Don't overclock before you install Windows... ALWAYS gives me Blue screens...
