virgin media broadband installer german winxp ?
hi all,
im living in a house of a friend of mine in UK.

i like to use my computer with german windows xp.
tried to install the broadband setup cd, but it says, this language is not supported.
any chance to get the installer for windows xp german version ?
thx for helping
Re: virgin media broadband installer german winxp ?
What exactly do you need from the installer disk anyway? If he is using a direct connection, your need a router so you can share. If he is using a router any wireless settings are written on it. If its wired you should just be able to plug it in. Only other things it would do is install their anti-virus, get avg free and email.. use hotmail or google so if you change ISP you don't have to email email address so in summary... you don't need the disk. BTW I am on virgin media, and i didn't use the disk, and I run linux on my machine so the disk REALLY does not work!
Re: virgin media broadband installer german winxp ?
The VM disk does nothing but change your MTU (if needed for your broadband speed) and litter your system with some VM branding.
You absolutely don't need it. The big advantage with having an ethernet port out is that they don't need any fancy configuration :)

That's interesting what do they try and set the MTU too? I always set mine to the ethernet default of 1500 without any problems. One of the advantages of a cable modem is they don't chop off bytes from the standard MTU.
Re: virgin media broadband installer german winxp ?
Yeah, just connect the Ethernet cable and it should just work. Avoid USB where possible for networking.
Re: virgin media broadband installer german winxp ?
hi again,
maybe i have the wrong settings on my computer.
if i just plug in the wire from the cable router into my computer, i cant go online. not enough conectivity or something like that.
same happens to my laptop... do i something wrong ?
thx

Same as what's on there by the looks of it :)
I don't know if they still change it to be honest. On my 20meg install I had the disk that did it, a friend got an entirely different one that didn't *shrug*.
Either I got a latter one, or he got an updated one where it was decided not to change it any more. No idea which I'm afraid :)
edit - actually, that doesn't seam to alter the MTU by the looks of it. In that case, I'm honestly not sure. I'll have a dig about and see if I can find it.

I think avoiding the disk is the best idea.
BTW i knew 20000 was bogus before I looked at the page because the largest MTU for gigabit is 9100! 9000 is normally used allowing 100 for over heads such as the 4 bytes for vlan tagged packets.

Are you using a USB or Ethernet? If your trying to use USB stop using it right away and get yourself a network cable.
Please get a cmd window up and type ipconfig and copy and paste the output for us.

Ha yes!
Edited it as soon as I realised (hey, I need sleep!)....or maybe I'm just going crazy with old age :)
TCP Optimizer certainly doesn't fall under one of the 'dumb windows accelerator programs' though, although I will agree with you that a hell of a lot are of that nature. It's been going for years, pre XP IIRC where network settings would sadly often need modifying to get good results.
Generally speaking though networking is that fundamental to a system these days that everything is set-up perfectly first time in my experience and I fully agree not to mess with them unless you know for certain what, and why it needs changing.
At least the OP doesn't have to worry about things like this :D

Assuming ethernet, you often need to reboot the modem on Virgin (I suspect it's due to a MAC address change). Just pull out the power and put it back in.
My Surfboard 5101e would give the same error if I just switched cables over. Using a router cuts all that out though of course.

Ah yes you may be on to something there.
Does the box you getting the wire from only any one ethernet port on it, and does it have a cable TV cable coming out of it? If so its a cable modem, and as Agent correctly points out you will need to restart your cable modem (unplug it and plug it back in again), when you switch between computers.
If you are using this cable modem directly you should get a router for your network, so all of you can go online at the same time.
