Mac laptop grey screen of death

My son's laptop won't function, just shows the 'grey screen of death' - presumably equivalent to Windows blue death screen. He works away from home so I can't actually see the thing but has anyone any ideas for recovery (he's got some important job files he was working on). Yes I know he should've backed up etc etc.

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

But i thought Mac just work and don't crash ? If its really important, until he gets it fixed could he not just take out his HDD and stick it in another Mac and transfer the files to a Pen drive or something ?

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

yes, all lies, I tell you, all lies!

over on the DV Doctor forums, some peeps (all lies I tell you!!!) have been having GSOD after updating to Snow Leopard. Apple is looking into it, apparently, and seems not an unknown problem

sigh - if only people stuck to Windows.......

One can never stop saying Thank You
