3gb - Works 4gb - Wont Post
Hi All
Bought a Asus PK5PL/EPU to replace a faulty board in my brothers pc (usb ports died)
Anyways going into this board are 4 x 1GB geil ddr2 800 sticks bought in 2 matching pairs
now no matter what combination i try i can only get it to post with 3gb if i have 4gb in there i just get 1 long beep and 2 short ones.
I have tried setting timings, fsb and voltage settings in the bios to no avail.
The ram is not list as compatible on the asus site but is listed as compatible with the motherboard on the geil site.
tested all sticks individually and the all post and tried a stick in each slot and its posts in all.
Any other ideas???
Cheers

I know you said you changed the voltage manually, but did you try manufactures recommended DRAM voltage?
Re: 3gb - Works 4gb - Wont Post
Sounds like you've tried most things. I presume you do have the latest BIOS for the motherboard?
Re: 3gb - Works 4gb - Wont Post
yeah tried the voltage at 1.8 and upped to 2 but still no luck,
yeah it has the lastest bios.
Cheers
Re: 3gb - Works 4gb - Wont Post
Is there a 'memory hole' type option in the bios somewhere?
Re: 3gb - Works 4gb - Wont Post
Cant find any option for a memory hole setting.
tried some different memory today and it did the same
Re: 3gb - Works 4gb - Wont Post
do they match the specs of the mobo of non ecc/unbuffred?
Re: 3gb - Works 4gb - Wont Post
Have you tried a different stick of ram in the 4th slot? I had a similar problem with an HP desktop that I was upgrading the memory on. On the HP machine if I put in 4 sticks of identical memory it wouldn't boot - 4 x 256Mb, 4 x 512Mb or 4 x 1Gb. I could put in 3 x 1Gb and 1 x 512Mb and it worked - weird. Never got to the bottom of the problem as the customer wasn't willing to pay for a new mobo and I'm guessing it was some problem with the memory channel controller.
Re: 3gb - Works 4gb - Wont Post
did you increase MCH voltage at all?
Re: 3gb - Works 4gb - Wont Post
After reading up and few hours of googling just seems as this is a budget bored it doesnt like 4 x 1gb stick, so will get 2 x 4gb sticks

Yeah, that sounds about right! Seen boards before that just won't work with 4GB, no matter whether it's in two slots or four though. BIOS update sometimes fixes the problem, but you have said that you are at the latest already.
