Slow SATA speeds in windows 7

I've recently installed windows 7 x64 professional on my destop and am currently moving files from my vista partition to the new windows 7 partition but only getting transfer speeds of 25mb/s at the most with ACHI enabled in the bios and using the latest Intel ICH10R drivers. Any suggestions on how to improve this performance?

Re: Slow SATA speeds in windows 7

If the drive was partitioned in a version of Windows prior to Vista, I would suggest deleting the partitions and re-creating them (Vista solved the old partition alignment issue that caused poor performance)

Also, don't use AHCI unless you have to.....it is normally slower then plain old SATA/IDE mode on a workstation.

Something I've noticed on 7 is when I benchmark with HD Tune or something, rather than the line being drawn consistently like on other machines, it appears in big chunks and performance is below what it should be. I haven't got round to testing under another OS yet so it might not be software related but maybe similar to what you're experiencing. I'm using a SB700 BTW.

I done a Windows 7 HD Tune test yesterday, didn't experience any chunks in the line graph.

Can you post up a picture of your HD Tune test?

Sorry I wasn't clear - I mean where the line is usually drawn consistently as the drive is tested, on this computer it appears bit by bit, in chunks, while the test is in progress.

Re: Slow SATA speeds in windows 7

i'll keep an eye on things and have a look with HDtune and change the settings back to ide and see if it makes any difference. I assumed that ACHI was supposed to be faster as i've read (in several places). was definately faster in vista ultimate though

Re: Slow SATA speeds in windows 7

ACHI allows things like NCQ, so in some circumstances can be faster. But IDE is a simpler protocol, less overhead, and for non-server usage can end up faster as a result.
