I would say an AMD Black edition CPU would be the easiet at first as you could just up the multiplier
to start with. Then once you know what it can do you could OC it via the FSB and learn to do it
that way etc. Also by getting say the phenom 2 black edition dual core you can investigate
unlocking extra cores.
No doubt someone can recommend a decent mobo with the 710 or 750 southbridge
To be honest, the motherboard and CPU I have are extremely simple and exceptional for overclocking.
I couldn't recommend a better overclocking companionship.
Just a bit of advice on overclocking; the hardest part isn't overclocking, it's actually getting the balls to save the bios settings and see if it worked. First overclock is the hardest and most nerve racking. After that, it's ridiculously easy.
Core i5
MSI P55 GD65 / GD80

Indeedy, let it do the work for you just press the oc genie button and reboot, it does the rest for you lol.
If you want to learn how it did it just go back into the bios and check out what it set, and tweak away yourself. Pretty much what i did and i got a stable 4ghz from mine .
Main thing to remember is volts kill components either through heat or to high a voltage, don't go nuts, keep an eye on the temps (get a decent aftermarket cooler) and you will be fine.
Yeah, it's a reasonably straightforward process... with a good bit of trial and error thrown in!
The Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (G0 stepping) is supposed to have a lot of potential as an overclocker, so this should allow you a decent increase.
And yep, the Phenom II Black Edition's do have the unlocked multiplier to make things a bit easier.
