    Excel Editing Help Needed

    Morning guys

At work we have a couple of Excel documents (Stock Lists) that need constant updating and are accessed by 20 or so terminals. ATM they are on the main server and are open access - which creates a problem - they can only be edited by the user who opens it first. So if I then try to open it I can only do so as 'read only' which means trekking round the place logging everyone else out Until I can open it to edit.

Now in an ideal world I would like 3 people to be able to edit the document - and the document would update as work was done - is that possible?

Then I also have the issue of access - I would like it if editing was password protected - so at any time I could open the doc and be able to edit and not receive the 'read only' message.

I have looked under the tool menu at the 'protection' section but can't find what I am looking for - can you please........

    Bah - beaten to it.
Be aware that this may increase load or saving times. We have a number of reports shared across the network and it can take substantially longer to open/close/save the file.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

No. Unfortunately you can only protect a sheet/workbook. When editing you would "unprotect" it to allow editing, but there is no easy way to protect it again. (In fact you can't protect shared workbooks, you can only protect unshared workbooks, THEN share them).

This sounds like something that you could sort out with a central database (with a little bit of effort).

    Re: Excel Editing Help Needed

Excel isn't really the tool for this sort of thing. You need to look at something like Access instead.
