According to the CPU compatibility list the IB9 can support the Intel Q9000 series quad core processors so I would get a Q9400 for around £141 to tide you over:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Intel...ache-8x-Retail

Here is the CPU compatibility list:

    http://www.abit.com.tw/cpu-support-l...l_p965_ib9.htm

Of course you may need to upgrade the BIOS and also make sure that your PSU is powerful enough.

You may have to flash the bios for it to recognise the new 9xxx cpu, check online to see if you have to and if you do, do it before removing the old cpu.

It should be Ok for some older games but TBH it may cause a bottleneck with newer games as even a budget CPU should be faster. However since the Opteron 170 is a dual core socket 939 CPU you should be able to get at least £50 to £60 on Ebay for it.

Being a socket 939 CPU not only are you upgrade options limited but expensive.

I would look to sell your CPU,motherboard and RAM. Depending on what you have you maybe able to get £100+ on Ebay for the whole shebang. For around £150 you could get an X2 545,770 based motherboard and 2gb of DDR2 or hopefully DDR3.

Re: thining of a upgrade time ?

hmm, interesting about the price, but the problem i have is that 1 pin on the cpu broke off, and i make it work by inserting a pin into the motherboard which makes contact with the cpu, lol, i know cow boy job, but it works 100%

i know i can probably sell it on ebay as a bundle and get away with it but i just can't do that to someone.

can i ask, is the 8800gt a good gaming card, is there any games it won't run (bfg 512mb)

and about the opteron, i have heard its a good overclocker, will overclock to about 3ghz, would that be ok to game on, if still not, you got any names of good old games, lol

The 8800GT would be fine for most games. If you can overclock your Opteron a bit then it will help things!!

Re: thining of a upgrade time ?

8800GT is still a very competant card at moderate resolutions. As has been mentioned earlier the Skt939 really limits your options.

However there are a number of people that are reluctant to change platform and so that has really pushed the 939 processor second hand values very high comparatively.

Your best bet more more CPU power is a platform switch - the balance isnt quite right at the moment your GPU outstrips your CPU by a fair margin, and therefore you wont be getting the max out of your GPU.

thanks guys, i don't really want to spend a lot of money upgrading just for gaming, especially with the limited games available for the pc, rather spend it on a console, oh well will see how well the old rig holds up to the games
