Windows 7 Upgrade Edition

Okay, to put it simply...


I have XP on my current machine. I'm tempted by the current Windows 7 Upgrade edition deals. I hear that it is possible to use the upgrade edition on XP machines, but you need a clean install....So how does the upgrade part work? For all it knows I could install it on a completely blank system, no?

What about if I have to reinstall later, down the line? How would that work?

it will probably request your XP key and maybe media during install and check the key and against the components in your PC.

I don't see why you can't dual-boot onto another partition or do a clean install onto a new hard drive should you prefer. If you reinstall later you will probably be asked for your XP media and possibly key again. This is how it's worked for me in the past.

Any idea what the pricing will be on the upgrade edition?

There will be no such thing as an 'upgrade edition' on launch. They are all *full* versions due to the EU + bundling IE issue.

Upgrade version or not, I'd just get the full version (can't argue at pre-order prices starting @ £50 - 15/07/09 to 09/08/09 only) & either do a clean install, or what cotswoldcs suggests.

People in the US, for whom the upgrade version is available, & who will be upgrading from XP (or previous OSes) are being asked to do a fresh install anyway.

Okay rather than start a new thread I'll revive this one.

I ran the windows 7 upgrade advisor, and it says my computer won't be able to run Aero!

Yep.

You'll be fine, try upgrading drivers as suggested. I didn't think Win7 would be as 'snappy' as people claimed, but I'm very impressed.
