Is such a thing possible? I know you can go from dvi to hdmi but am not sure if it works both ways. Basicly my graphics card only has a hdmi output left and I want to connect a monitor to it, and dvi monitors are cheaper than HDMI.

A simple answer is that an HDCP session will result in the exchange of keys between the source and display device. The source device will query the display to make sure that the equipment is HDCP compliant before video is shown. Non-HDCP devices such as PC's and older model DVI products will work with any DVI compliant display, but the HDCP compliant boxes will show an image only on HDCP compliant display.

Not entirely sure how old that info is but as i understand it there would be no guarantee that a bluray would play (display) for example if the monitor wasn't hdcp compliant, as i assume the bdrom drive (or the content) maybe hdcp encoded or whatever.
Its a bit of an iffy area though tbh as i used to use my media centre with bluray drive through vga on my tv and was told it probably wasn't playing out at full res because of this, something else which is apparently affected by hdcp??
I now use a hdmi cable and input on my tv "just in case", well you pay out for the hardware you might as well get the most out of it.
Here's a solution to get round pissy HDCP if your going to an older display or monitor.

and if you want to stream the above into a pc and all over the place on the fly, Well then you mix in one of these. http://www.datapath.co.uk/visionrgbE1.html
