    First system build.

    Hi everyone.
Im planning on building a pc for the first time, i've got about £700 to spend. i've picked the following parts:

    CPU - AMD Phenom X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz Socket AM3 8MB L3 Cache
    Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-790FXTA-UD5
    GPU - ATI HD 4890
    RAM - OCZ 4GB KIT (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1800Mhz
Case - CM Storm Scout Case - 120mm and 2x 140mm Fans Included
    Harddrive - Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache
PSU - OCZ Stealth XStream 600W PSU - SLI Ready ATX2.2 12cm Fan

Are these parts compatible? Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Re: First system build.

when you say right amount/kind i am assuming you mean enough to power all the components you have listed and can get everything powered up without any extensions or what not. All new PSUs should have sufficient connectors for the kit you have listed but if its power you're worried about then it depends on a number of factor such as upgradeability, overclockability, etc. then again just for what you have 600W is more than enough

    Re: First system build.

Thank you for your reply. what I mean by "right amount/kind of connections" is will it have enough connectors, like 6-pin connectors? For example the GPU's Minimum Power Supply Requirements are "500 Watts with 2 6-pin connectors / 550W with one 6-pin and one 8-pin"

Or do you think a "Corsair 650W TX Series PSU - 120mm Fan, 80+% Efficiency, Single +12V Rail" would better?

    Re: First system build.

If you are going for the 965, make sure you choose the 120W version rather than the 140W.
What will you be using it for?

125W one produces less heat and draws less power while giving the same performance or possibly better performance. For £700 I think you'd be best served going for a Intel i5/7 build though personally.

    Re: First system build.

really, the same or better performance? i just assumed that the same model with more power going to it would be a little bit more powerful. why do you suggest a Intel i5/7 cpu? i didnt think there was much between AMD Phenom X4 965 and an i5 performance wise? thanks

Nope. The reason they've been able to lower the power is because they have found some way to make it more energy efficient, and obviously as its the same model it will retain the same performance Upgrades to CPU's like the lower power requirement of the 965 are known as 'steppings' - but that's another story

Anyhow, the Core i5 is faster than the 965 and is also a lot more energy efficient and offers quite a bit of over-clocking, assuming you know what that is. For the amount your spending I think it would be insane to go AMD and I think the majority on here will agree. Another smart move would be to swap out the 4890 for a 4870 as they can be had for around £80 now and only lags behind slightly!

Hmmm well there is only one i5 to pick from which is the i5 750 - retails for around £145. The motherboard is a lot more tricky, considering you was going to spend circa £140 on the AMD board you should be able to pick up a decent board, within this price range there is the UD4 Gigabyte boards and even an EVGA one (on Scan). I'll try and run up a build for you now

    Re: First system build.

Okay this was sjut a quick search on Scan for some components:
    Core i5 CPU : £148 link
    4GB RAM : £84.69 link
    Motherboard: £143 link
    Case : £44 link
    Power Supply Unit: £62 link
    Hard Drive: £67 link

Total: £551.97. Certain products may be cheaper elsewhere - especially the RAM. If you get 20 posts on Hexus however you are entitled to free shipping from Scan so you can benefit from that.
This doesn't include the Graphic card because Scan only have 1 4870 and its £130 Also i don't know if you like the case, this was just an example one Do you need a DVD drive as well ? It would also be a wise move to get a 3rd party CPU cooler IMO.

A SATA DVD-Re Writer will cost around an additional £20 To upgrade to the i7 860 it will cost around £50 extra - I suggest you shop though to see if you can get any of the items your after cheaper. Also check Scans today only page as they do certain items cheaper on there !

The i5 CPU is on Scans today only page as is RAM and a choice of i5 motherboards, there are some cases on there also! If you do buy anything off the Today Only page click the buy link on the Today Only page, rather than the item link otherwise you will be charged normal price
