    Avg Free and Windows 7

Just been to PC World with my Cousin to buy a Compaq Presario CQ61-320SA (OS Windows 7) Laptop for his 11 year old Daughter its for school work and the net.it was £379.99. We were told that we should buy Symantec Norton 360 Version 3.0 All-in-one Security which would have bumped the price to £409.34. we told the salesman that we were going to install AVG Free onto the Laptop, at this point he said (you don't want to use Avg as this will slow your Laptop down as Avg Free is very resource hungry his words). We both use Avg on our Desktops and i use it on my HP G70-120EA laptop without any problems. Do you think AVG Free will be okay for her Laptop ??, any advise would be appreciated what do you think of Zonealarm for windows 7 i want something simple so i dont end up using my freetime sorting it out , cheers all.

Sales spiel by PC World. Norton is a not worth the money imo and is always pimped to the under informed masses by PC world wanting to meet sales targets. AVG, Avira all good free antivir solutions that will not considerably or noticeably (imo) slow the lappy. As for firewalling, the OS firewall will suffice in most cases.

Share the same thought as OiD. I would also suggest you lick at Kaspersky solution. Less than £20 for 3 machines. In my view it offers better protection than AVG, Avira, Avast, other free solutions.

I have to admit that in this case the PC World salesman may be onto something, even if he might have his own agenda - I've found that recent versions of AVG do seem to cause a perceptible performance hit on older and/or low-spec machines. Also, I've noticed quite a few complaints on the interwebs suggesting it has a poor detection rate, which is obviously a bit of a showstopper for an AV product.

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials these days, which seems highly rated and is completely unobtrusive in operation (used to use Avira, but I found its automatic updates would fail more often than not, and it had a huge and annoying pop-up window). I can't see any great need for a third-party firewall either, as the inbuilt Win7 item seems to do the job well enough.

It goes without saying that keeping up-to-date with security patches from Windows Update is a good idea, regardless of which AV/firewall you're running...

Maybe, but he was recommending Norton.

That's like the pot calling the swan black.

AVG used to be okay, now it's crap.

ZoneAlarm has always, in my opinion, been crap, but that's also not needed as Windows 7 has rather nice inbound and outbound filtering options.

The built-in firewall plus MS Security Essentials are all you need. My sister and mother use MSSE just fine. However, their first line of defence is Firefox+NoScript.

Actually, I've found the most recent versions of Norton are not too bad at all - it's certainly not the Borg-like system-assimilating bloatware most people still associate with Norton/Symantec.

I still wouldn't bother with it though, given the availability of very capable free alternatives.

I've not noticed to be honest... mind you, I've done my utmost to never "find the most recent version of Norton" again, so that's probably why

If my mother used Firefox with NoScript, she'd think someone had broken the Internet every time she found a new shopping site (cue endless support calls to yours truly). It certainly does what it says on the tin, but most of the time it's just an annoyance and more trouble than it's worth IMHO...

I would say "try it, you might like it", but I have to admit it's hard to think of a convincing reason why you should.

Re: Avg Free and Windows 7

To be honest, my last experience of Norton was my dad's PC World laptop, where he had to ring up Norton every month so they could re-activate his subscription. It was a year long, but for some reason the license just wouldn't stick properly. So yeah, not tempted I have to say
