I just booted into UNR via a pen drive (just to have a play) and it reports my HDD is failing. "disk has many bad sectors" is what ubuntu tells me.
659 bad sectors.
It's out of warranty now so what can I do?

Cancel your clear armour and buy a new HDD.
LoLz. Can't cancel my clear armour order as I already left money for all that back when I went to Japan.
Anyhow, new laptop HDD - easy enough to purchase but would any old laptop HDD work in my Studio 1535?
For example...250GB Sammy. Would that be a simple plug and play?
Rule 1 for HDs - if they show any signs of breaking, buy a new one.
It's simply not worth the faf of trying to do anything, just buy a new drive and either reinstall or 'ghost' across.
Is the laptop one PATA or SATA?
Dell Studio 1535's take SATA drives so that one will be fine. You could also consider a 7200rpm one depending on what you use the laptop for
