    Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

My graphics card (8800 GTS) has been seriously playing up lately. Nearly all games are crashing on me regardless of the settings. I can play Left 4 Dead 2 with everything on high at 1400 * 900 for 15 minutes before it freezes and I have to quit to desktop. Does the exact same thing with everything on lowest settings.

I downloaded the latest drivers from the nVidia website and installed them. Halfway through the installing it said it couldn't install them and I had to revert back to the previous drivers. It apparently did this then I got prompted to restart. I did so then when it booted back into windows I had no display. Booted into safe mode and from there I tried to update the drivers or roll them back, couldn't do either - said I had the latest drivers. I'm writing this whilst in safe mode, still no display in windows .

Pretty obvious this is a driver issue, no idea how to solve it though. Can't update drivers neither can I roll them back, so I'm stuck with the ones I've got (and any I download don't work) which seem to not give me a display in windows.

    Any ideas?

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

Is your card over heating causing it to crash?

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

I think the card itself may be toast. If it can't take any drivers or provide a display...
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

Sorry Haiku; with Phage on this one.

Any artifacting; splash screen boot ok? As its a PCIe 1 card it should introduce itself; no artifacting here?

    Few things to try in order;
Try and ID your card with CPUZ equivelent. Hopefully it's still recognised.
Driversweeper and normal mode using standard vga adaptor.
Maybe a fresh install and old drivers.

    Failing everything

Strip card and 200C for ten minutes.

that'd be brave... sounds like a console repair to me

MAKE SURE THE FAN IS TURNING on it......

    if it is...

Heatsink OFF... clean the GPU and ram chips... reapply thermal paste.

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

Good point although I think if it is overheating; it should start throttling, artifacting like crazy and then shut down.

The card not beingrecognisedasPhagepointed out is not a good sign.

I've presumed there is no warranty left!

My space key is kanackered btw; its not written diarohea.

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

Nope there's no artifacts or glitches, which is weird. Fan is spinning fine, I don't think it's overheating as my system isn't shutting down. Well, if it was overheating, wouldn't it just shut the system down? Splash screen is fine too.

I don't know if it's because I'm running in safe mode or not, but when I start it it generates an error report, and everything but my graphics card is recognised. Don't think I can actually stress test it since I just have the basic drivers installed it? All the stress testing programs are just throwing up errors when I try to start them, as well as temp monitoring programs.

Card is 2 years old, no warranty... of course .

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

Any chance trying in a second PC?

The stress testers seem to need drivers in order to run. How did driversweeper run with an attempt at a fresh driver install?

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

Have you tried looking in a system dump for when the card errors it might provide some insight as to what's going on?

Vista is more stable so if the card starts to error it may not necessarily crash the system as Vista can recover from driver crashes.

Does sound like something is wrong with the card.

This might sound stupid, but have you tried reseating the card? Have found that this has fixed similar problems in the past with hardware.

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

Used driversweeper to remove the drivers and I now get a display in windows. However, I can't update the drivers now. Downloading drivers from nVidia website does the same thing as before - gets error whilst installing, then I need to reboot and remove them in safe mode using driversweeper. Can't update them using the windows utility either, says it is already up to date.

Got out the CD that came with the graphics card, can't install it using that as it just throws up an error "The VGA detected is not XFX's." Even though it is .

Card only seems to want to use the basic window drivers and doesn't seem to accept the nVidia drivers or even be recognised anymore.

Haven't reseated the card yet, will try that if I can't find a software solution. Failing that, I'll ask my brother if I can try the hard in his rig to see if it works.

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

Went through a few drivers on the nVidia site and I eventually found one that worked . So I'm not back in Vista with a display, going to test it for a while.

Thanks for everyones help, no doubt I'll be back asking for help about another problem .

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

Definitely think it's on its way out.

Got a BSoD the other day for the first time ever with this rig. Then, I was browsing the internet as usual and the screen just went this very pale teal colour and I couldn't do anything. The entire screen was this colour and I couldn't see a cursor or anything, just this pale teal. Restarted and it's working fine, but what the hell happened? Never heard of something like that before, weird.

Re: Graphics Card Drivers Not Working

It will have to do for the time being though, as I can't afford a new graphics card right now. Was planning on an upgrade very soon, but due to unforeseen circumstances I can no longer afford an upgrade until... never .

If it dies on me or become unusable I'm pretty screwed haha.
