    Compy keeps crashing

Hi all. Slight problem with my computer as listed in my specs. Whenever anything needs a reboot (windows update etc) it crashed on rebooting. It gets stuck at where the little window should appear (W7 pro) and I have to reset. Also my usb keyboard won't let me choose not to go into recovery- I can't move the cursor on the black screen!

    All help appreciated!

The latter problem (USB keyboard) may be because the USB drivers haven't loaded at that point. That could be the problem with a reboot - note the cautious use of could and may!)

Could be a bios setting, or if your mobo has a PS2 kbb connection (and you have a PS2 kbd to hand, might be worth investigating.

I think I have a PS2 kb knocking around- sounds like a trip to the loft to investigate when I get home! Its odd because I can use the same kb to access the bios no probs.

    Re: Compy keeps crashing

When you cold boot, once the power supplies are stable and the processor is allowed to start, it jumps to the entry routine in the BIOS. One of the initial tasks is to set up the interrupt vector table in RAM, which initially points back to the interrupt handling routines in the bios - which would include USB support.

When control is eventually handed over to the OS, the OS is free to overwrite the interrupt vector tabble to point to its own subroutines/event handlers/drivers, (and in the case of Linux, I think ALL events are redirected back to Linux kernel handlers).

I'm not an expert in the low level Windows set up routines, but it woul;d be theoretically possible for a soft boot to leave the over-written interrupt vectors intact, but because windows itself hasn't rebooted, the vectors don't point to anything meaningful in the OS. This is only speculation - and I may be way off the mark (Paul Adams would know!) but worth investigating IMHO.

    Re: Compy keeps crashing

My, that is rather too much for my limited knowledge! But what you are simply saying is that:

    1) the USB drivers for the OS aren't available at the early stages of the OS loading

    2) Don't 'reset' my computer, shut it down and then turn it back on...

If I have missed your points please feel free to say so!

Yes, thats pretty much it - except in para2, it should be warm re-booting.

But this is only speculation, and I may be sendimng you on a wild goose chase, but since it is easy to check out, it is probably worth doing.

    Re: Compy keeps crashing

I will see when I get home! If all else fails I will use it as a excuse to upgrade to the wife. 'Ooh, loook the computer keeps crashing- I need a new one. And a monitor. And a screen calibrator. etc, etc...'
