Re: Power LED flashes - then nothing

We've all done it on a build, I think it's a rite of passage & it's usually the most obvious thing you can imagine. I put my hands up to not plugging in the HDD on several occasions & spending 30mins wondering what I've done wrong!

I don't thinks it's the Hdd as far as i can tell the computer shuts down pretty much immediately, so doesn't even get to do much with the HDD

Did you add any TIM to the CPU?
    IF you did
Did you get any on the mobo and is it shorting anything

cpu fan came with "thermal interfacing material" pre applied.

I still haven't been able to locate the source of it, gonna spend a few hours looking it over today.

rewired the F_Panel with all the correct +ve's and -ve's, still just a flash, so I'm ruling that out

Re: Power LED flashes - then nothing

Sounds like it could be either a short, or a faulty motherboard or psu. Try the method suggested to test the PSU with nothing to connected to it, if doing that still results in nothing from the PSU its the PSU most probably, otherwsie it might well be the motherboard or a short somewhere.

Take every item out (memory, graphics card etc) and re-install them making sure they're seated correctly and make sure you've got the cpu in correct with no bent pins etc.

Try powering it on with one of each item attached, ie try it with just the HDD added, then with just the dvd drive, then with just one fan, and do it till it causes an error.

If it doesn't stop it powering up, add them in combinations, always keeping it to one added item.

It is tedious, but it is best to be methodical with fault finding sometimes.

How many sticks of ram do you have? if more than 1 or 2 , try swapping them around and seeing if a combination or a single one of them stops it powering on.

Ok that is great news, now add ONE thing at a time.

Make sure you UNPLUG IT FROM THE MAINS, give it a cool down of 30 seconds, even though it looks off power goes to the board to control things... like the power switch.

As tempted you cut corners as you are DO NOT plug in fans when machine is running, as it will dump on the voltage rails.

    1) Other stick of memory first,
    2) reset switch,
    3) power led
    4) USB connectors
    5) Fans (one at a time)
    6) Dvd
    7) HDD
    8) HDD led

Leds you may connect the wrong way round, if they don't come on, swap the direction.

Re: Power LED flashes - then nothing

    HDD works.

Quick question, can I have the HDD and DVD drive on the same ATA power cable from my psu?

Yes, however if you have spares why not give them their own cable? BTW the power connector is a Molex or a SATA power, the data connectors are PATA (known as IDE normally) or SATA. So which ones did you mean?

Re: Power LED flashes - then nothing

ok on connection to fans we had the flash again. Must be those.

Using molex's plugging the power into the back of the molex from the fan, is this how we should be doing it? obviously something is wrong with them.

Also, we have a 4 pin coming off the end of the fan power cable, we've been putting it into "SYS_FAN1" is this the right place? its the only 4 pin connector on the mobo I've been able to find

ok on boot it worked with 1 fan and not connected to SYS_FAN1, maybe we dont need to connect it to there.

Great keep up the good work. They are fine on the same cable better if you can put them on different ones. Some PSUs have 1 power rail some have multiple ones, if they are on the same cable they will be on the same power rail, if they are on different ones, they will not be, this may make the power to the device more stable. The other thing to consider current draw down the cable everything on a single cable means it has a create current, which could over load things (in bigger systems)... (however not going to happen in your one).

If you have any FANs off the PSU, put them on a seperate cable as they can be quite noisy (electrically) or put them on the same one cable as the DVD or something else not important.

Is this the CPU fan? If so this must be plugged however it should be in the CPU fan connector not the SYS one. SYS means case.

    OTHERWISE.....

The fan may be the wrong type for the motherboard, 4 pin fans are speed controlled, however the board may not be doing that. 3 pin fans have a speed sensor, 2 pin fans just go round (can be speed controlled a different way though).

Personally I would no connect that fan again and buy a replacement one a 3 pin one and put that into the board (if you have a connector for it). or use an adapter and put it onto the PSU directly.
