    Wireless External HDD ?

    WIRED DESKTOP - XP pro - SP3 - IE8 - IDE hdd's

I'm going back to an idea that I had some time ago.
I want to add a remote (thereby Wireless) hdd to my wired system. Its a home machine & I'm in a bungalow. I want to put the drive in my attic, about 8feet above the unit. It currently has ide drives.
I have a BT Home Hub 2.0 (N wireless tech) and I 'think' that I now only need a wireless case & ide drive.
    Is this correct ?
I know nothing about NAS, Links etc etc - basically, all I want is another hdd, which just happens to be remote - no sharing, no fancy bits'n'bobs etc.

As i'm disabled & on very limited income, I need to do this as cheaply as possible.

    Any ideas please ?

    thanks for reading

    Re: Wireless External HDD ?

The hard drive itself needs an operating system to get the data to and from it - so that implies some form of NAS which could be connected wirelessly. However it would need a power supply. If there is a power supply in the attic, then you could also use powerline adaptors for the data rather than wireless. However cheaper stil (and more reliable would be to run an ethernet cable up the wall into the attic.

If you mean, just have a hard disk (and powersupply and connect that remotely using wireless - then no, that can'yt be done. If you had a SATA drive, then in theory you could transmit the serial data to the drive - but AFAIK no such device exists.

Why do you need to put the device in an attic (not the best place - they get hot in summer and cold in the winter) you could just geyt a USB drive and connect that to the PC if it is just additional storage space that you require.

    Thanks for your help Peter

The hard drive itself needs an operating system to get the data to and from it - so that implies some form of NAS which could be connected wirelessly.
Oooops,,, I thought it only needed power & the wireless transfer of data (Router to hdd [via case]). There is power up there.

If there is a power supply in the attic, then you could also use powerline adaptors for the data rather than wireless. However cheaper stil (and more reliable would be to run an ethernet cable up the wall into the attic.
The whole idea is to be remote – physically. If I wanted to attach cables, I may as well just have it sitting on the desk,,,, or inside the machine.

If you mean, just have a hard disk (and powersupply and connect that remotely using wireless - then no, that can'yt be done. If you had a SATA drive, then in theory you could transmit the serial data to the drive - but AFAIK no such device exists.
No SATA at the moment,,,, [tho’ I am toying with the idea of updating my kit – not sure whether to look at replacing internals, or getting a bare bones kit.]

Why do you need to put the device in an attic (not the best place - they get hot in summer and cold in the winter) you could just geyt a USB drive and connect that to the PC if it is just additional storage space that you require.
It doesn’t have to be in the attic,,,, it’s just that the attic is the closest place to the computer corner of the lounge. It could just as well be a bedroom – next room along.

what about one of these? Looks like it only supports IDE drives though.

    Re: Wireless External HDD ?

Nice thought killie, but that would still need to be added to the wired network as it doesn't appear to have a client mode.

@ the OP: there's (AFAIK) no existing wireless HDD caddy. Even if there was, you'd probably be looking at USB / Bluetooth, not wireless ethernet, and certainly not wireless IDE (which seems to be what you were originally thinking of!). If all you're after is more storage, by far your best option is a "normal" USB external hard drive.

    What about this: http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers...uys3_13453.htm

Not sure about performance, but might do the trick for you. You may be able to sell you BT Hub.

    Hope this helps

    Re: Wireless External HDD ?

Out of interest, why do you want it to be remote?

I mean, if you've got space inside your PC, then that's the logical place to put it - and judging by your posts you do. But on the other hand you're keen to have it remotely.

I just can't think of a benefit right now, so was wondering why you wanted it.

    Re: Wireless External HDD ?

Could this be an idea? http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/136183...e/Product.html

From what I gather you could plug an external HD into it and update via wireless.
