    Boot issue!!!

Recently been getting a startup issue with my pc has got worse since i bought my 5850.

I think its my psu not having enough juice but what do you guys think,

The issus is on post screen it initialises usb controllers but then gets stuck on my dvd drive and hangs. Usually on first use of the day once psu is warmed up it happens very little.

The reason i think its my psu is it is 600w but i've had it 5 years and it was second hand when i got it and recently when i re did my loop i opened my psu up and it was completely full of dust (we recently sanded the hallway floor) I think that maybe one of the resistors or capacitors is not firing up right, Can anyone tell me different.
Is definitely not an overclocking issue this happens just as much when system at stock And not an overheat issue as it only happens when pc is cold.

    Re: Boot issue!!!

What PSU is it exactly ?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Re: Boot issue!!!

Kick me for stating the obvious but could it possibly be your DVD drive? Just seems very odd that itonlyhappens when the DVD drive is being checked.

I suppose the only way to be sure if you tried a new PSU or unplugging the dvd drive.

    Re: Boot issue!!!

its an ocz powerstream 600w uk edition with adjustable rails. (all the rails are running at max output Have tried adjusting them)

have tried taking the drive off and running it and the pc booted fine then plugged it back in and pc was fine.
Drive is virtually brand new i replaced my old one as it was happening before. This one is a different make and model old one was ide new one S-ata. Have also tried replacing the sata cable on the drive too.

This seems completely random as to whether it will happen sometimes it will do it 3 times in a day then it will be fine for two weeks,
Have not tried second psu as don't have one spare.

Have you tried to test the system with default BIOS settings?
OCing can cause weird things sometimes...

    Re: Boot issue!!!

Further to what Domestic_Ginger said, I'd try removing the DVD drive for a day and seeing whether the problem remains.

You'd expect a dodgy PSU to show other symptoms - namely stability under load or the initial power on, or for drives to be dropping out randomly.

Try removing some external drives when rebooting and check again.

    Re: Boot issue!!!

Not quite the same problem as its not my DVD drive that causes my computer to hang on startup. Mine wont POST if my USB wireless device is plugged in, take it out and all is good. I have seen the same problem before on USB devices but never on DVD drives.

Does the DVD drive work correctly once the PC has booted?

    Re: Boot issue!!!

took dvd drive out for two days still happened twice but then put it back in and nothing has happened for a few days.

The real problem is that this will happen 5 times in a day but then it will be fine again and nothing happens for days or weeks.

Dvd drive works fine whenever its used. and once the system is up and running,

Have very few usb devices other than keyboard mouse printer (never switched on) joypad and backup hard drive. The hard drive is the most recent addition to the pc but it has been doing it for months before i bought the drive.

Under load the system runs fine no crashes ever.

    Re: Boot issue!!!

It might be worth flashing the bios on your motherboard, I had a board play up like this and flashing it fixed it.
