Slightly n00bish question, I know, but I really can't be bothered to trawl through loads of sites to find out. So...: What is the best free way of actually getting a DVD to play on Windows 7? God it ****s me off that this just doesn't work by default.

Mine works by default :/ Either windows media player or better the media centre. Did I get codecs through ATI drivers or something?
God that Shark site is one of the worst sites I've ever come across. Took me quite a while to even find how I download the files I wanted rather than some other spurious crap.
Seriously, this is why people are buying Apple machines in droves. Nothing is more annoying than wasting an hour of your life just trying to watch a goddamn DVD on your computer.

I have the shark codec pack installed, but I still get this error:
Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.
Goddamn it. I give up. Seriously, I've got a PhD and I still can't get a DVD to play on my computer after spending 80 minutes on the problem. Wtf.
Whichever twit came up with the concept of DRM needs to be taken away and shot.

Really, nothing else is required. There's no point screwing around with DIY "codec packs" when one self-contained app can do all your media-playing stuff.
Have you checked that no one has changed the region code on your DVD drive?
Try syncing the date/time with the the Microsoft server.

I've never had any issues playing DVDs on Win 7, they've always worked straight out the box for me. I'd second checking the DVD Region hasn't been incorrectly set somewhere along the line...
