    ATi 5670 audio via HDMI

I have a ATi 5670 and using audio via HDMI as a default.

I am configuring this system in my office before I take it home and plumb it into my HT amp.
It is basically going to act as a media store.

I have the thing plugged via HDMI into my office Dell2408 monitor and just for testing have some old Logic3 Screenbeat pro50 speakers plugged into the monitor's audio out, initially just to ensure that audio was working.
The audio sounds horribly overdriven even when I reduce the output volume to next to zero in control panel [XP Pro] and distorts terribly.
I tried different crappy speakers (pcline crapolas) and they gave the same result.

Is this an inherent problem with ATi's audio via HDMI or is it a problem with the audio conversion in the monitor?
When i take this box home and plug it into my Denon AVR1910 am I going to get similar results?
    Is it a driver issue?

I am hoping it's the DAC in the monitor but need some reassurance before I take it home and have to face the wrath of SWMBO.

Re: ATi 5670 audio via HDMI

I'm pretty sure it'll be a monitor issue. In most cases, the ATI will just be bitstreaming the audio format direct to your AVR, so that it can do the decoding. As it's just acting as a passthrough device, it shouldn't be able to affect the sound.

Whilst I don't have my ATI card set up to output over HDMI (yet) I've not read anything about issues with overdriven audio.

Looks like he's just disabling power saving mode on the card.

The DPC latency issue is something I've seen before, but not in this way. If you use ffdshow to bitstream HD audio codecs to an AVR, and play your media using a software decoder the audio is broken up. Switching to a DXVA compatible video decoder fixes the issue, which seems to be related to the ATI drivers and DPC latentcy.
