    Dvd-rom sd-r6112

    Hello again.

Second time lucky. I got timed out when I finished composing, hit submit and lost my first attempt!

My Toshiba DVD-ROM no longer recognises DVDs for viewing or burning.

XP will still allow viewing and burning of cd's, so it would seem that the unit is physically OK.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled both Nero (6.0.0.20) and ASUSDVDXP to no avail.

The Toshiba manual has the following:

DVD-ROM can not play a DVD in
the drive or certain types of CD
    media (i.e. CD-plus, etc.)
Is the DVD Rewriteable drive driver loaded ?
    • Is the DVD disc the correct format for the type of system that you are
using? (i.e. on a PC an ISO9660 IBM compatible PC format as opposed
to Apple/Mac HFS disc or UNIX disc formats which will not function).
    • Do you have the correct software applications program/drivers installed
    to run a DVD disc?
    • Has the Windows DVD Rewriteable drive software driver program been
corrupted by a virus. Run a Virus Scan program and repair if possible.
Contact Technical Support if the Virus renders the software drivers not
    useable.

I have seen a few conflicting reports about drivers for this drive and sufficient evidence to show mine is not an isolated case but I have not been able to determine a course of action from reading other threads and forums.

Can anyone shed some light on what I else I might investigate, please?

    Cheers,

    Andrew

You don't need additional drivers for a DVD drive, they have been built into Windows for years.

CD's and DVD's work an entirely different wave-lengths on the laser. Thus one working doesn't mean the drive is ok. It's actually very common for one to stop working and not the other (Playstation 2's were doing this all the time back in the day!)

The only other thing that comes to mind is that you have a bad filter installed, but I doubt this is the cause.

I agree with Agent here. I think you need to look for a replacement drive personally.
