yes but you already have lost it by formatting it the first time
unless you try to use a recovery software or something

You'll need to use something like @Active Undelete (I've had a lot of success with this, when others wouldn't even read the drive) to try and recover the data.

Anything that has been over written however is most likely gone. Either way, you're looking to reformat it at some point to make the disk fully usable again. It's just a matter of if you can get the data back first.

Re: I think i have screwed up bigtime

Just to amplify Agent's post - 'all' formatting does is lay down the filessystem on the disk - reformatting resets the filesystem index entries (on an NTFS filesystem) in the master file table. But the data remains intact. So suitable tools may be able to recover some (or if you are lucky) all your data. Resetting the master file table makes the existing data space re-useable, so any use of the drive after it has been reformatted will over write any data there, and significantly reduce the chances of successful data recovery. (The same is true, in principle, for a FAT file system)

Re: I think i have screwed up bigtime

Don't know if it's too late or you've bought a new drive yet but there is a good MS-DOS app called TestDisk that is a bloody miracle worker...

    http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.c...id=1139&page=8

Thats an article that has a kind of how-to on using it and it may be possible to just repair the file table instead of copying the files across manually, worth a shot instead of splashing more cash.

Either way, would recommend people check out that app, saved my ass on more than one occassion
